Your Mac Looks Different After Updating. Here's What Changed.

macOS Tahoe introduced Liquid Glass, Apple's biggest visual redesign in over a decade. Here's what changed, why some users find it hard to read, and how to adjust.

If you updated your Mac to macOS Tahoe and things look a little off. There are translucent menus, glassy sidebars, and some new icons you don't quite recognize. You're not imagining it. Apple made its most significant visual overhaul to the Mac since 2013, and for many users it's a jarring shift. If you want some help making sense of what changed, or getting your Mac working the way you want, feel free to get in touch.

What Is Liquid Glass?

Apple calls the new look "Liquid Glass", which is a design language that uses translucency and light refraction to make the interface feel more like physical material. Toolbars, sidebars, and menus now reflect the colors of whatever is behind them. The menu bar at the top of your screen is now transparent, so your desktop wallpaper shows through. App icons were redesigned with a softer, more rounded look.

The idea is to make the interface feel more immersive and to draw attention to your content rather than the chrome around it. Whether it succeeds at that is, frankly, a matter of taste. Many longtime Mac users find it beautiful. Many others find it harder to read, particularly in bright conditions or when a busy desktop image creates too much visual noise behind the menus.

Why Some Users Find It Hard to Read

The main complaint is legibility. When a translucent sidebar or menu bar reflects a complex background image, text and icons can blend into the colors behind them. Apple has faced criticism for text fields that are hard to distinguish, and for icon designs, including a change to the iconic Finder icon that feel inconsistent with the Mac's history.

This is not a bug, and it will not be fixed in a future update in the way a crash or connectivity problem would be. Apple has confirmed that Liquid Glass is permanent and that iOS 27 and macOS 27 are not expected to walk back the design. If you find it difficult to use, the best solution is to reduce the transparency of the interface, go to System Settings, then Accessibility, then Display, and check the box for "Reduce Transparency." This makes the sidebars and menus opaque and dramatically improves readability for most people.

What Else Changed in macOS Tahoe

Beyond the visual redesign, Tahoe added a Phone app for Mac that lets you take iPhone calls directly from your computer, a redesigned Spotlight search, and a new Games app. It also introduced tinted icon options and updated light and dark mode appearances. For users on older Intel Macs, it's worth knowing that macOS Tahoe is the last version of macOS that will support those machines - the 2019 Mac Pro, the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 iMac, and the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro are all supported, but future versions of macOS will not run on Intel hardware.
