iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable Is Finally Real

Apple unveiled its first foldable phone today, called iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Here's what it is, what it costs, and who it's actually for.

After years of rumors, Apple used today's event to introduce its first foldable iPhone, called iPhone Duo. It sits alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup as the most expensive and most experimental phone Apple has ever shipped. If you are trying to decide whether this is worth the leap, get in touch and we are happy to talk it through before you buy.

What iPhone Duo actually is

iPhone Duo opens like a book, with a roughly 7.8 inch inner display that behaves like a small iPad when unfolded, and a smaller outer display around 5.5 inches for everyday phone use when closed. Apple built the hinge and inner glass to minimize the crease that has bothered foldable phones from other companies for years, using a titanium and aluminum frame with a liquid metal hinge mechanism. It runs on the new A20 Pro chip, and Apple made the unusual choice to bring back Touch ID instead of Face ID, most likely to keep the phone as thin as possible when folded.

Why the name, and why now

Apple has used the Duo name before, on the PowerBook Duo laptops in the 1990s and more recently on the MagSafe Duo charger, so it fits the pattern of naming a two part product around that word. The bigger question is timing. Samsung, Google, and others have sold foldable phones for years, and Apple typically waits until a category matures before entering it. That extra time shows up in the details Apple is emphasizing, particularly display durability and a crease that is far less noticeable than earlier foldables from other brands.

Should you actually buy one

iPhone Duo is priced well above the rest of the iPhone lineup, and first year foldables from any manufacturer tend to carry tradeoffs in weight, battery life, and long term hinge durability that only become clear after a year or two of real use. If you are drawn to the idea of a phone that opens into a small tablet for reading, note taking, or multitasking, it is a genuinely new option. If you just want a reliable daily phone, the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 17 will serve you better for a lot less money, and with a much longer track record.
