Apple HomeView Is Here: What It Does and Who It’s For

Apple HomeView lineup

Apple announced HomeView today, a $299 home hub with a 7-inch touchscreen that sits on a table or hangs on a wall. We have not touched one yet, so this is a first read of Apple's announcement, not a review. On paper it looks like a cross between a HomePod and an iPad: a speaker that plays music and answers to Siri, with a screen on top for video calls, timers, photos, and controlling things around the house. Pre-orders are open now, and if you are wondering whether it makes sense for your home, get in touch and we can talk it through.

What Apple Says It Does

Think of it as the kitchen-counter gadget Apple has not had before. You can ask it to play music, start a timer, or show a recipe step by step while your hands are busy. You can make FaceTime calls on it, flip through your photos like a digital picture frame, and send a quick announcement to other speakers in the house. It also acts as a control panel for compatible smart home gear, such as lights, thermostats, door locks, and cameras. It costs $299 whether you stand it on a counter or mount it on a wall, and it is expected to arrive November 13.

It Needs an iPhone or iPad

HomeView is not a standalone computer. Apple says setting it up requires a compatible iPhone or iPad, and that is also how it shows your private things, like messages and calendar, only to you. It supports multiple users, up to six people according to Apple. It recognizes each person by face and shows them their own screen, so a couple or a whole family can share one device, while shared photos and music stay open to everyone. How well that works in a busy household is something we cannot say until we see it in person.

The New Siri Is Still a Beta

HomeView comes with a new version of Siri, and Apple itself calls it a beta. Beta means unfinished, and anyone who has asked Siri a question and gotten a strange answer knows why that matters. If the main reason you want HomeView is a smarter Siri, it is reasonable to wait for early reviews before ordering.

Wi-Fi Still Matters

A device like this is only as dependable as your home network. If it will sit in a kitchen or on a wall far from the router, a weak Wi-Fi signal can make video calls stutter and smart home controls feel slow. Our earlier post on why a mesh network beats your ISP's router explains the usual fix, and our home network service covers getting every room properly connected. If you decide on the wall-mounted version, an on-site visit is the easiest way to get it hung, powered, and working.

Should You Pre-Order One?

The best fit looks like a household that already has an iPhone or iPad and wants one central screen for music, calls, and the lights and locks. If you mostly want a good speaker and a voice assistant, a HomePod may still be all you need. If you would like help weighing HomeView against a HomePod or something else, our product research service is built for exactly that.
