WWDC 2026 - Apple Heard the Complaints. Here's What's Coming This Fall.

After a bumpy year with macOS Tahoe and iOS 26, Apple's WWDC announcements focused on stability, speed, and fixing the Liquid Glass design issues users complained about.

If the past year has felt like a rough patch with your Apple devices, you are not imagining it. macOS Tahoe and iOS 26, released last fall, were among the buggier Apple software updates in recent memory, and the new Liquid Glass design they introduced drew some of the loudest criticism from everyday users that Apple has seen in years. This week at its annual developer conference, Apple previewed what's coming this fall, and for once the story is not about flashy new features. It's about fixing what's broken and making things work better. If you need help in the meantime, we're here.

Speed and Stability Are the Point This Year

The next Mac operating system, macOS Golden Gate, and iOS 27 are being positioned first and foremost as performance releases. Apple cited specific numbers at the keynote: photos will load 70 percent faster, AirDrop transfers will complete 80 percent more quickly, and the CPU scheduler has been redesigned to make multitasking smoother.

Those are unusually concrete claims for a software preview, and the specificity feels deliberate. Apple knows the past year generated more complaints and support requests than usual. Leading with hard numbers is a way of saying: we took it seriously.

iOS 27 will also run on iPhones going back to the iPhone 11, which Apple is calling the broadest compatibility of any iOS release ever. That's good news if you've been holding onto an older device and worrying about being left behind.

Liquid Glass Is Getting Dialed Back

The Liquid Glass design that came with Tahoe was polarizing from the start. On Macs especially, the translucent glassy effects caused real usability problems: window titles became hard to read, menus blended into whatever was behind them, and the transparency effects couldn't be properly turned off even through Accessibility settings, which frustrated users who rely on those controls.

Apple is not abandoning Liquid Glass entirely, but the new release gives users meaningful control over it. You will be able to choose a more subdued version of the aesthetic, or reduce the effects significantly. Accessibility controls for reducing transparency are being properly restored. It is not a full reversal, but it is a clear acknowledgment that the initial version went too far.

If you turned off Reduce Transparency last year and it barely made a difference, this update should actually fix that.

What Else Was Announced

There was more announced at WWDC than stability improvements. Apple revealed a significantly rebuilt Siri with some meaningful AI upgrades that are worth understanding on their own terms. We'll be covering that separately.

For now, the public beta of both macOS Golden Gate and iOS 27 arrives next month. The full releases are expected this fall. There is no need to rush. Waiting until a few weeks after the official release, once early bugs are identified and patched, is still the sensible approach.
