Why a Mesh Network Beats Your ISP's Router

The router your ISP provided is built to a price point, not to give you great Wi-Fi. This post explains what a mesh network does differently, why it matters for homes in Greater Boston, and why eero is worth a look for Apple households.

The router that came with your internet service was designed to keep support calls low, not to give you great Wi-Fi. If your connection feels inconsistent in certain rooms, or just never seems as fast as what you are paying for, the router is almost always where to start. If you would like help thinking through a Wi-Fi upgrade, get in touch.

The Problem with a Single Router

A single router broadcasts from one point. The further you get from it, the weaker the signal, and Wi-Fi does not travel cleanly through floors and walls. ISP-supplied hardware also tends to be built to a price point, with radios and antennas that are adequate for a small apartment but start to struggle in a larger home or anywhere with older construction. Dead zones are not a sign something is broken. They are just the limit of the hardware.

What a Mesh Network Does Differently

A mesh system places multiple nodes around your home that all work together as a single network. Your devices connect to whichever node is closest, and the handoff between them happens in the background without you noticing. The result is more consistent coverage throughout: the back bedroom, the basement, the back porch all get a real signal instead of whatever was left over after the router pushed through three walls.

You also end up with one network name across your whole home, rather than juggling separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. Most mesh systems are managed through a phone app, which makes things like setting up a guest network or checking what is connected genuinely straightforward.

For homes in Greater Boston, where older construction, multiple floors, and thick plaster walls are common, a mesh upgrade tends to make a noticeable and immediate difference.

Worth a Look: eero

If you are an Apple household, eero is a natural fit. Setup is done entirely through an iPhone app and takes most people fifteen to twenty minutes. There is no web admin panel and no configuration screens to navigate. You plug in the first node, follow the prompts, and place the additional nodes where you need coverage. Done.

eero integrates with Apple Home, supports Thread for smart home devices, and the hardware itself is compact enough that it does not look out of place on a shelf or side table. It is worth knowing that eero is owned by Amazon, which some people have feelings about, but the devices work fine without connecting any Amazon services and the setup experience is genuinely one of the best in this category.

Getting Set Up

The main decisions are how many nodes you need and where to put them, and placement matters more than most people expect. This is something we work through in setup sessions.
