Getting Your Bearings in Finder After Switching from Windows

Finder works differently from Windows Explorer, and the gap trips up a lot of Mac switchers. Here's how to change the view, find your files, and start feeling at home on a Mac.

One of the most disorienting parts of switching from a Windows PC to a Mac is figuring out where everything lives. The file manager on a Mac is called Finder, and while it does the same basic job as Windows Explorer, it works differently enough that longtime Windows users often feel like they’re fumbling around in the dark. If you’re just getting started and would like some in-person guidance, get in touch — we come to you and work at your pace.

What Finder Is and How It’s Organized

Finder is the app that’s always running on a Mac — it’s the reason your desktop shows up, and it’s how you navigate your files, folders, and external drives. Unlike Windows Explorer, Finder can’t be closed entirely; it’s a permanent part of the macOS experience.

The Finder window is divided into a sidebar on the left and a main content area on the right. The sidebar shows your most common locations: your home folder, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive, external drives, and anything you’ve dragged there for quick access. The content area shows whatever folder you’ve navigated to.

One place that confuses a lot of new Mac users: there’s no single “My Computer” equivalent where everything is organized under one umbrella. Instead, your personal files live in your home folder (named after your user account), and the rest of the system — applications, system files — is organized separately and largely out of view.

Changing How Your Files Are Displayed

Finder offers several ways to view files: icons, a list view, a column view that shows nested folders side by side, and a gallery view that previews the contents of images and documents. Many Windows users find the list view most familiar, since it resembles Explorer’s default layout.

To switch between views, use the row of icons near the top of any Finder window, or use the View menu at the top of the screen. You can also adjust icon size, spacing, and how files are sorted — right-click in any empty space within a Finder window and choose “Show View Options” to see the full range of choices.

Where Your Files Actually Live

Most of your personal files are stored in three main places: Documents, Downloads, and the Desktop. If you’re using iCloud Drive, your Documents and Desktop folders may be synced to iCloud, which means they’re accessible from any Apple device but may not all be stored locally on your Mac.

One thing that catches new Mac users off guard: the Downloads folder can become enormous over time. Every file you’ve ever downloaded — app installers, PDFs, images — accumulates there unless you actively clear it out. A good habit is to check it periodically and delete what you no longer need.
