Do Macs Need Antivirus Software?

Many Mac users believe they need antivirus software — but macOS has robust built-in security. Here's what the Mac already does to protect you, and when a third-party utility might make sense.

It comes up at nearly every first appointment with a new Mac user: "Should I install antivirus?" Often the question arrives alongside a specific product someone heard about from a neighbor or saw advertised online. The honest answer is more nuanced than a yes or no — and understanding why can help you make a more informed decision about your Mac's security. If you want to talk through your specific setup, get in touch and we can take a look together.

What macOS Already Does to Protect You

Apple has spent years building security into macOS at a fundamental level. Three layers of protection are worth knowing about. Gatekeeper checks every app you try to run and blocks anything that hasn't been vetted by Apple's review process. XProtect is a built-in malware scanner that Apple updates silently in the background, without requiring a software update from you. And since macOS 13 Ventura, Apple has been delivering what it calls “Rapid Security Responses”, which are smaller, targeted fixes that can arrive between full software releases, closing specific vulnerabilities faster than before.

Together, these tools catch the most common threats without any action on your part. For the average Mac user who downloads software from the App Store and avoids sketchy websites, this built-in protection is substantial.

When a Third-Party Utility Might Make Sense

That said, there are situations where adding a utility makes sense — particularly for peace of mind. Apps like CleanMyMac or Malwarebytes sit in a different category from traditional antivirus programs. Rather than trying to replicate what macOS already does, they offer monitoring tools, periodic scans for adware, and (in the case of CleanMyMac) system maintenance features like freeing up storage and identifying login items that run at startup.

The distinction matters: these are useful tools, not a replacement for good habits. Running one alongside macOS's built-in protections is reasonable. Running one instead of keeping macOS up to date is not, which brings us to the most important point.

What Actually Puts a Mac at Risk

The most common way Macs get compromised has nothing to do with viruses in the traditional sense. It's usually one of three things: running an outdated version of macOS, downloading software from unofficial sources or falling for a phishing attempt disguised as a legitimate email or website.

Keeping macOS updated is the single most effective thing most users can do. Apple's software updates regularly include security patches for vulnerabilities that malicious actors actively exploit. A Mac running a two-year-old version of macOS with a third-party antivirus app is considerably more vulnerable than a fully updated Mac with no third-party tools at all.
