Your Mac Can Now Cap Its Charge to Protect Its Battery

macOS 26.4 adds a Charge Limit setting that lets MacBook owners cap how high the battery charges, helping preserve long-term battery health for laptops that spend most of their time plugged in.

Apple released macOS 26.4 on March 24, and while most of the changes are modest, one feature stands out as genuinely useful for a lot of people: a built-in battery charge limit for MacBooks. If your laptop spends most of its time plugged in — on a desk, connected to a monitor, or sitting in a home office — this update is worth knowing about. If you need help installing updates or want help getting this configured, get in touch and we can walk you through it.

What the Charge Limit Setting Does

The new setting lets you cap how high your MacBook's battery charges — at 80, 85, 90, 95, or 100 percent. When the limit is set, your MacBook will stop charging once it reaches that threshold and won’t resume until the battery drops below it.

The reasoning is based on how lithium-ion batteries age. Keeping a battery consistently charged to 100 percent accelerates wear over time, which is why battery capacity gradually decreases on older laptops. By capping the charge at 80 or 85 percent, you reduce that stress on the battery, which can extend its useful lifespan over the course of years.

This isn't a new idea — Apple introduced something similar for iPhone a while back, and third-party Mac apps have offered charge limiting for years. What’s new is that it’s now built directly into macOS, with no additional software required.

How to Find It

The setting lives in System Settings, under Battery. You’ll see a Charge Limit slider that lets you drag it to your preferred maximum. There’s no on/off toggle — setting it to 100 percent is effectively the same as disabling it.

macOS 26.4 is a free update, available on any Mac that already runs macOS Tahoe 26. To check for it, go to System Settings, click General, then Software Update.

Who Should Actually Use This

The feature is most useful if your MacBook stays plugged in for most of the day. If you’re at a desk with a power adapter connected from morning to evening, your battery is likely spending hours sitting at 100 percent — which is exactly the scenario the charge limit is designed to address.

If you regularly use your MacBook away from power and rely on a full charge to get through the day, setting a limit below 100 percent will reduce your available runtime. For most people who work at a desk, 80 or 85 percent is a reasonable setting that you’ll rarely notice in day-to-day use.
